Exhibition at the National Library in Sofia marks 150 years since the death of national hero Vassil Levski

The national programme to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vassil Levski's death will be held across Bulgaria. There will be lectures, talks, processions and exhibitions throughout the week. The exhibition "I am Levski" can be seen from 16 February in the central foyer of the National Library. There will also be an exhibition dedicated on the 150th anniversary of the Apostle's death in the building of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

"To remember that we all belong together to one nation, to one peoples, to one state and to fight together, in fact the key word is "together" and that was the key word in his messages as well. Everything we can do from now on, we can do it for the sake of the memory of this one image that cannot divide us," said caretaker Culture Minister Naiden Todorov.

On 19th February, 2023 Bulgaria marks 150 years since the day Levski was hung.

Vassil Levski is a leading figure in the fight of the Bulgarian people against Ottoman rule in the late 19th century. He was a revolutionary, democrat, ideologist, organiser and leader of the Bulgarian national liberation movement, founder of the Internal Revolutionary Organisation (IRO) and of the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee (BRCC).

He was called the Apostle of Freedom by the Bulgarian people for his self-sacrifice in developing a strategy to liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule.
