Fire broke out on the train travelling on the route from Sofia to Varna. The accident occured near the village of Mogila, just outside Kaspichan, at 19:40 on November 3.

The fire started from a spark in the locomotive.

Passengers were helping other passengers in the train to get out of the carriages. All the people were taken out. A woman with mobility problem was carried by other pasengers.

"The first passenger carriage caught fire while the train was travelling. Fortunately there was a colleague from Varna who pulled the handbrake and stopped the train. An evacuation of the passengers started. When our teams arrived, the first carriage and part of the second carriage were on fire and they stopped the fire from spreading into the third and fourth carriages," explained Commissioner Ivan Ivanov, head of the Shumen fire-fighting service.

The fire was spotted by the staff on the train shortly after Kaspichan station. The staff reacted promptly, evacuating the passengers and calling the emergency number 112, railway company BDZ said.

About 50 people were travelling on the train, there were no reports of injured passengers. When the locomotive was unhitched from the first carriage, one of the drivers suffered a slight injury to his arm.

Fire-fighting teams are at the scene, the causes of the accident are being clarified. Arrangements are being made to transport the passengers. Water and food have been provided, the national railway carrier added.
