First case of “Kraken” subvariant of Covid-19 reported in Bulgaria

The first case of the Covid-19 Omicron variant known as "Kraken" - XBB.1.5 was detected in Bulgaria, the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCPD) reported on January 20, 2023.

The infection was confirmed in a patient from Sofia who is at home treatment.

The World Health Organization is monitoring XBB.1.5 with caution because of its potential for accelerated spread and reduced neutralization by vaccine and natural immunity induced from previous SARS-CoV-2 variants, the NCPC added.
