Fishermen from Varna: Offshore wind farms in the Black Sea could potentially drive fish away

If wind farms are built in the Black Sea, this could potentially drive fish away, further out to the sea, and our livelihoods may be threatened, Emil Milev, chairman of the Fishermen's Association "Black Sea Sunrise", said on February 5. He has communicated with his colleagues in Europe who said that cetaceans and dolphins in the North Sea have disappeared because of the wind farms.

Emil Milev's association and his fellow fishermen from Varna are adamant that in no case should wind farms be built in the Black Sea because this will take away 20% of the territory for fishing. The problem was not only the blades, but also the cables that would connect them to the coast.

According to "Vazrazhdane" MP Kosta Stoyanov, the construction of wind farms in the Black Sea will change the climate near the coast. Many of the birds will also disappear. Stoyanov claims that there is already a promise to buy the electricity from the wind turbines in the Black Sea. The purchase price would be 160 BGN per megawatt hour.

Tomorrow, a round table on the subject will be held in Sofia, and the fishermen of Varna have declared their participation.
