Great Bulgarian film director Nikolai Volev passed away
Renowned Bulgarian film director Nikolai Volev died at the age of 78, in a domestic accident. This was confirmed to BNT by the Ministry of Interior on October 16. He fell from an attic window of the apartment where he lived on "Krakra" street in Sofia. The police have inspected the scene.
Nikolay Volev was the director of some of the most beloved Bulgarian films such as "Dvoynikat" (The Double) (1980), "Gospodin za edin den" (A Gentleman for a Day) (1983), “Da obichash na inat” (All for Love) (1983), "Margarit i Margarita” (1989), remake of “Koziat Rog” (The Goat Horn) in 1994 and “Ogledaloto na diavola” (The devil's looking-glass) (2001).

Nikolai Volev was born in Sofia on April 10, 1946. In 1968, he fled Bulgaria without permission from the authorities. After a stay in a refugee camp in Turkey he went to England. In 1972, he graduated in film directing from the London Film School. After returning to Bulgaria in the 1970s, he worked as a screenwriter and director of documentaries and feature films.
"We mourn the loss of great director Nikolay Volev. He left a vivid mark in Bulgarian cinema with his iconic films such as “A Gentleman for a Day” and “Margarit and Margarita”. May he rest in peace," the Council of Ministers wrote on their Facebook page.
BNT pays tribute to Nikolai Volev and will air two films directed by him – the comedy "A gentleman for a Day", on Saturday, 19 October, at 8.30 pm on BNT 2 and “All for Love” on Sunday, 20 October, at 15.30 on BNT 1.
