Jackals spotted in the Sea Garden in Burgas, Ministry of Environment launches an inspection

Jackals appeared in the Sea Garden in the coastal city of Burgas. The wild animals were spotted by random passers-by in the late hours, and photos were circulated on social media networks.

The Ministry of Environment is investigating the case, as the animals are believed to come from Atanasovo Lake, and hunting parties from the seaside city are on standby to take care of their population reduction.

"So, I saw a jackal in the Seaside Garden," says Pavlin Georgiev.

He spotted the jackal during a cycling workout, around midnight in the Sea Garden.

"The jackal crossed my path, and because I often see jackals in the forest, I recognised it. I stopped my bike and went to chase it here in the bushes. There are dozens of jackals on the road to Sarafovo, but this is the first time I have seen them in the Sea Garden in the city", Pavlin Georgiev said.

"Jackals do not attack people. The problem is that jackals can carry all the diseases typical for the members of the dog family (Canidae), including rabies. Spread of ticks is characteristic for the Sea Garden," says Neven Karavasilev, head of the hunting and fishing association "Swan" - Burgas.

According to experts, the main reason for the invasion is the increased population of jackals, which find shelter around Lake ‘Atanasovo’, where they feed on the eggs of the birds.

"There should be a person inside the reserve itself to regulate the number of jackals by hunting, by trapping," says Neven Karavasilev, head of the hunting and fishing association "Swan" - Burgas.

The Ministry of Environment told BNT that in order to allow such hunting in the protected area, experts would first check whether it was necessary.
