Marieta Georgieva becomes the third Bulgarian female who climbed Mount Everest
Marieta Georgieva climbed the highest peak on the planet (8848 m) and became the third Bulgarian female to climb Mount Everest. The news was announced on the social media network Facebook by the company organising the expedition.
The expedition was led by the legend and holder of several world records in mountaineering, including the one for the fastest ascent of all 14 eight-thousanders on the planet - in 6 months and 6 days - Nirmal Purja (40). A total of 13 people from different countries, plus 16 guides - most of them Sherpas - climbed the peak yesterday. The climb took place via the most mainstream route - the South Saddle of the peak.
Petya Kolcheva was the first Bulgarian woman to climb Everest. She summited the world’s tallest peak on 22 May, 2009, together with her husband Kamen Kolchev. Two years ago, Silvia Azdreeva also climbed Everest together with Nirmal Purja.
Marieta Georgieva is the 16th Bulgarian to have summited the world's tallest peak. On April 20, 1984, Hristo Prodanov became the first Bulgarian to summit Everest. He died descending from the summit. Ivan Valchev, Metodi Savov, Kiril Doskov and Nikolai Petkov were also from the same expedition. Doichin Vassilev was on Everest in 1997, followed by three in 2004 - Petko Totev, Doichin Boyanov and Hristo Hristov, who died below the summit. Petya and Kamen Kolchev were the next to climb the peak, Atanas Skatov in 2014 and 2017, Slavi Nestorov (2018), Stefan Stefanov (2018), Silvia Azdreeva (2022) and now Marietta Georgieva (2024).
