New megalithic site discovered in the area of Brezovo

Four new megaliths were discovered in the region of Brezovo, Southern Bulgaria. They served for special rituals of the ancient Thracians. They have been studied by local historians and the famous specialist in Thracology, prof. Valeria Fol.

Two of the megaliths are in the area of the village of Rozovets. One of them was named “ The cave of the initiates” by he professor. The locals call it "The Ship" because of one of the rocks that resembles a ship's mast.

"Since there are no natural caves in the area, the ancients placed this stone you see above me, arranged the fallen stones and thus a sacred space was formed," explained Radnyu Shopov - Tourist Information Center - Brezovo.

The "Cave of the Initiates" is the largest megalith ever discovered on the territory of Brezovo municipality.

"From the beginning to the end it is 14 metres, at least 3 and a half meters high and this makes it a huge structure. We have not measured the stone above me, but it must be 3 - 4 metres high," Radnyu Shopov said.

The other newly discovered megalith near the village of Rozovets is called "The Face".

"We were doing a crawl of this area north of Vidkov dol, then we came across this rock mask, it was facing east towards the sunrise," Shopov said.

The last two finds were in the land of the village of Svezhen. The first of the megaliths is the "Ritual Circle". You can get to it on a preserved ancient road.

"Passing along the Roman or ancient road, which is off to the side of the site the ancients used to go, there are two altars. One for liquids, which is carved into the rock, and the other is a well-defined flat surface," Shopov added.

The fourth find has been called "The Great Altar." All megaliths provoke the curiosity of tourists and are already enjoying great interest.
