Northern Lights lit up Bulgaria's sky (see pics)
Northern lights lit up the sky over Bulgaria during the night on October 11.
A powerful solar flare caused the northern lights. Red, pink, blue and green colours adorned the skies over Bulgaria and around the world last night.
The stunning sight could be seen from the coasts of the US and UK much further south than usual.
Also known as auroras, the lights appear when energized particles from the sun slam into Earth's upper atmosphere. This is because the stronger the solar storm, the further south the aurora can be seen. The sky was lit up with startling colours because of the phenomenon.
