President Radev: The Bulgarian public expects the fight against corruption in the upper levels of politics to begin at last

The Bulgarian public expects that the fight against corruption in the upper levels of politics will at last begin, President Rumen Radev told journalists on September 12.

Asked to comment on GERB leader Boyko Borissov's idea about a "gentlemen's agreement" among the parties of possibly forming a government coalition after the elections.

"Any agreement should be based on the expectations of the public. The Bulgarian public expects that the protection of the national interests will be at the core of any government policy. It also expects that the fight against corruption in the upper levels of politics will begin at last and the parties should say how they are going to wage that fight.

Overcoming the political crisis requires reinstating principles in politics, requires the parties to realise that trust is the stake for their success. And trust comes from being honest to the citizens, because repeating promises and vows in an election campaign and then immediately breaking them after the election destroys that trust. It is very important that the parties themselves assist the Central Election Commission and the government to really organise fair elections," he said.
