Prosecutor General requests hearing in Parliament over high-level corruption
Bulgaria’s Prosecutor General, Ivan Geshev, sent a letter to the Speaker of the 49th National Assembly, Rosen Zhelyazkov, with a request to be heard by the MPs in connection with specific pre-trial proceedings related to corruption in high levels of power and influence peddling, the press centre of the Prosecutor's Office said on June 9.
The hearing has been requested on the basis of Article 26 of the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, which provides for discussion with MPs on the activities of the prosecution and investigative bodies, including in case of difficulties in the performance of their functions.
The Prosecutor General points out that the hearing should be held behind closed doors in view of sensitive information contained in the pre-trial proceedings.
The letter stresses that the protection of the independence of the judiciary is inextricably linked to transparency and cooperation with other authorities. An open dialogue would help to promote European standards in order to ensure stability and justice for the society, Ivan Geshev said.
