Skeleton of a giant discovered near Sredets

A skeleton of a giant was discovered near the village of Debelt, Sredets municipality (Southeastern Bulgaria).

The skeleton was found during excavations in a private property. The remains are of a man who was over 2 metres tall.

After anthropological examination, it was found that the skeleton was that a male, from the period of the Roman era. It is yet to be searched whether there is any alteration in the genes that determine growth and whether the man suffered from gigantism. Initial research suggests his height was 2.20m.

The Deultum reserve also shared another find - a double grave where the heads of the deceased were facing each other. These are believed to be skeletons of a couple in love. The age, sex and cause of death of the two are yet to be determined after anthropological examination of the bones.

Nearly 500 graves have been found in the Southern Necropolis. Among them are presumed to be medics and pharmacists as some of them are buried with scalpels and medicine boxes. According to anthropologists, it could also be an epidemic, given the large number of skeletons that are buried relatively close to each other and at the same time -mid 2nd century.
