Sofia undergaround's 10 new stations will be ready for pasengers by 2027

The construction of the section of the underground passing through "Poduyane" quarter - "Hadzhi Dimitar" - "Levski" is 55% completed. The construction of the 3 km route and three metro stations should be completed by the end of 2025. The new route will help reduce road traffic in the section by around 25% and vehicle emissions by several thousand tonnes per year.

"This is good for the development of the city, of public transport, for the possibility for a huge number of people to use convenient and fast transport, to leave their cars, which you know has a huge impact on our city both in terms of traffic congestion and air quality. So this project, which is so strategic, is going well. We are looking at the long-term development," Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev said when inspecting the progress of the construction works of the third metro line extension.

There have been challenges in this section too.

"Extremely high water, weak soils, landslides, special pre-empting reinforcements are needed at every step as it is being built. It required pumping of groundwater entering the tunnel, a constant technology that is for the most extreme tunnel construction conditions," explained the director of Metropolitan, Eng. Stoyan Bratoev.

The first section of this route "Hadzhi Dimitar" station - "Stadium Georgi Asparuhov" station is about 62% completed. The construction of the station at the stadium will be ready this month, then work on its interior will begin. The implementation of the second section of the route "Stadium Georgi Asparuhov" - "Trakia" is 54% complete, and the third section from "Trakia" station to "Vladimir Vazov" is 50% complete.

In the second extension of Line 3 through "Slatina" quarter to "Arena Sofia" and "Tsarigradsko Shose" the implementation of construction works to date is 12%. The tunnel boring machine is expected to start there at the end of October. The route is 6 km long, with 6 stations and should be ready in 3 years.

The construction of the underground station on Blvd. "Pancho Vladigerov" in "Obelia", between "Slivnitsa" and "Obelia" is advancing as per plan. It will be ready at the end of 2026, 12,000 residents of the district will be able to use the station. "Obelia" and "Modern suburb" will be able to use the metro. The new 5 stations along the route to Students’s city are also in a process of design.
