Specialised Prosecutor's office launches a probe into the high electricity prices at Bulgaria’s power exchange

The specialised Prosecutor's office is starting an investigation into the record high prices of electricity at the power exchange.

Last week, the price reached BGN 400 per megawatt hour. A little later, the Association of Bulgarian Employers' Organizations sent a letter to caretaker Prime Minister, Stefan Yanev, requesting urgent action in relation to the electricity prices.

The inspection is on a signal from various trade organizations, the Prosecutor's office said on August 17. The supervising prosecutor requested documents and information from various institutions such as the Ministry of Energy, the Bulgarian Energy Holding and the Bulgarian Independent Energy Exchange. He has also ordered certain actions to be taken by the State Agency for National Security (SANS).

"At this moment we cannot draw conclusions, as the inspection has just started and a response from the institutions and actions by SANS are expected. After receiving all the documents, the supervising prosecutor will make an analysis and assess or refuse to initiate pre-trial proceedings or to initiate pre-trial proceedings," said Hristo Krastev, a spokesman for the Specialised Prosecutor's Office.
