The state of emergency in the municipality of Bregovo (North-West Bulgaria) is still in place on 12th of March because of the risk of flooding. The flood hazard results from waters coming from neighbouring Serbia where the river Timok flooded thousands of decares of land.
The river itself is in its bed, but the level is high. The underground waters also rise. Both farmland and house yards are flooded. People also worry that drinking water may get polluted.
Therefore, the Regional Health Inspection took samples on site. There are sacks of sand in Bregovo to protect Timok's dyke.
First of all, the level of the coming water is almost the same since yesterday. This is the first risk. The second is because this level is very high, the levee dyke may collapse. No one can guarantee. If the dyke breaches, all this water will flood the village, the Mayor of Bregovo, Milcho Lalov, said.
