Westinghouse Electric signs MoU with five Bulgarian companies to build AP1000 at Kozloduy NPP

Westinghouse Electric has signed Memorandums of Understanding with key Bulgarian suppliers to support upcoming nuclear projects based on AP1000 technology at the Kozloduy NPP site in Northern Bulgaria and other projects across the region, the Ministry of Energy said.

The event was held at the American Chamber of Commerce building on October 19 in Sofia in the presence of Energy Minister Rumen Radev, U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria Kenneth Merten, Energy Committee Chairman Delyan Dobrev and other guests.

The five Bulgarian companies that have signed the Memorandums of Understanding with Westinghouse Electric are Oscar-El, Glavbolgarstroy, ENPRO Consult, EnergoService and EQE Bulgaria.

"This deepens the potential for cooperation in the manufacture of key components, including control and management systems, radiation monitoring systems, as well as the provision of various engineering, consulting and construction services," the department said.

Minister Rumen Radev commented that he is extremely pleased that five Bulgarian companies are becoming part of the process of building a new nuclear power plant and expressed his expectation that more will join them soon. He added that building a local supply chain in the long term is extremely important for the country’s national interest, and the team of the Ministry of Energy will do its best to support this process.

David Durham, President, Power Systems, Westinghouse Electric, said the Bulgarian nuclear supply chain has a wealth of experience and is key in supporting the company's efforts to successfully deliver the world's most advanced, proven AP1000 reactor.

Westinghouse Electric expressed confidence that the cooperation with “Kozloduy NPP-New Builds” PLC on the project to build a new nuclear unit with AP1000 technology will also create a large ecosystem of local companies working in the field of nuclear engineering, which will become the backbone of the future nuclear industry based on this technology across Europe.
